Personal Philosophy: Projects

DISCONNECTED

I remember making the adjustment from my senior year of high school to my freshman year of college. At times I felt so disconnected from a school that I was supposed to spend at least four years at. College felt nothing like high school in the sense of feeling like you belonged. My high school was not small but, not the biggest either. It was a real family feel to it, especially from faculty and staff. That seemed to change in college. At Christmas break I decided to leave that school. I went on to attend two more schools after transferring before making my way to Kansas City Kansas College. It was here that my life would change forever.

INSPIRED

Having such a bad initial experience college experiences when I arrived to Kansas City Kansas I had no clue what to expect. It was here that I began to take interest in the higher education field because, I saw the effects these people had in changing my life for the better. I acquired a desire to be that person for someone like me one day. In particular, my Athletic Academic Adviser was someone who really sparked my interest. He was one of the first people I had encountered in higher education that cared about me as a person and my success. He, along with several other faculty and staff there made me feel at home. I know it was not by chance that I ended up there. I needed those people. They inspired me to pursue student affairs. I wanted to be a difference maker, a life changer.

EDUCATE THE YOUTH

I believe the purpose of student affairs should be to improve the students experience by providing them with the knowledge necessary to achieve their academic goals as well as, succeed in life. Colleges could not continue on without students therefore they are the main priority. Student affairs professionals should take pride in the quality of there students college experience. I am a graduate assistant at Arkansas Tech and our motto is "every student counts" and I stand strongly behind that message. In my current position as a GA for the women's basketball program I act as a mentor in many ways for the girls. I see myself continue in this type of role looking forward as my career in student affairs continues.
